While Robb was messing around on boats I messed around in the old part of town. I saw this painting covered in dust and spider webs up in the rafters of an antique store I asked the sales assistant to bring it down so that I could have a closer look.
Off she went and returned a few minutes later with a rickety old ladder.
I helped her with it and held it down with white knuckles while she slowly climbed the rungs. She was near the top when I realised that at 5’1” she wasn’t going to reach the painting, not even from the top step!
She looked down at me, but I shook my head. No, it was not a good idea for me to climb a rickety ladder — especially not in the US!
So I left thinking … next time if it’s still up there and there’s a taller sales person around, it’s meant to be mine.
May 2013: We visited Anacortes, WA.
While Robb was messing around on boats I messed around in the old part of town. I went back to the antique store. The painting was still up in the rafters, the sales assistant was 5’8” and they’d bought a new ladder.
The painting’s mine now.
